What's the best time to visit Danang, Vietnam?

Da Nang (or Danang) is the main city in Central Vietnam, located on the coast and home to around 1 million people. While many people visit the famous neighbouring town of Hoi An, Da Nang is a hugely underrated coastal city with stunning beaches and plenty to do.

So if you’re planning a trip to Danang or thinking about visiting while you’re in Hoi An, what’s the best time to visit Danang?

Having spent several months in Vietnam, including two months living in Da Nang during the best season and the not-so-best season, hopefully I can shed some light on the best time of year to visit Danang, Vietnam.

Da Nang is located on Vietnam’s central coast around 2 hours south of Hue, the old capital of Vietnam, 700km south of Hanoi and 900km north of Ho Chi Minh City.

The coastal city has an idyllic blend of stunning white sandy beaches, a vibrant city, plenty of attractions, and nearby mountains for amazing scenery, hiking and an escape into nature.

Weather in Da Nang?

Like almost everywhere in Vietnam, Da Nang has a dry season and a rainy season.

The dry season starts in early spring with January and February being the shoulder seasons. March - August are generally dry with July and August being the hottest months.

September and into October is the shoulder season while Da Nang rainy season is October-December.

When is the best time to visit Da Nang

The best time to visit Da Nang is undoubtedly during the dry season, generally March to August is a great time to visit Da Nang.

The time of year you pick depends on what you prefer for your trip.

If you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday with great weather, July and August are the best for plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures that are consistently mid-30C. If you’re visiting nearby Hoi An, these months can see temperatures soar closer to 40C in the Ancient Town - making it incredibly hot during the heat of the day.

If you’re not a fan of the heat, spring or early summer is probably a better time to visit Da Nang, around March to May.

If you prefer cooler, dry weather, many locals and expats also love the New Year, from late January-February into March and April the weather is a comfortable 20C with cooler nights and dry weather. This also means no mosquitos as the temperature is cooler and the humidity is low.

Towards the end of August and into September as you head towards the rainy season, humidity also increases, as do mosquitos! If you’re like me and you’re prone to getting bitten, September is probably not the best time to visit Da Nang - I saw a noticeable difference in the amount of mosquito bites I got in August vs in September.

September is still an okay time to visit but the earlier in September the better if you want good, predictable weather. We had great weather in the first two weeks of September but towards the end we had more torrential rain and thunderstorms most evenings. While temperatures were cooler after a storm, humidity was very high!

When is the cheapest time of year to visit Da Nang?

Danang and Vietnam generally is very cheap to visit compared to western prices, so there’s not really an “expensive” time of year in Da Nang.

However, like anywhere, prices increase as demand increases which means the summer months are the most expensive for hotel prices and flights. The rainy season has the cheapest hotel prices so October to January is the cheapest time of year to visit Da Nang.

Generally food prices do not fluctuate in Vietnam with the seasons as is sometimes in case in European destinations. So don’t worry about your other daily costs changing, generally prices will stay consistent apart from hotels and flights.

The only time I saw a noticeable increase in food prices was during Tet. Tet is Lunar New Year in Vietnam which happens during February.

I spent Tet in Da Nang and during this time, most shops, Da Nang restaurants, bars and hotels will shut down as Vietnamese people return home for the 10 day holiday. During this time, anywhere that is open will usually charge a 10-40% surcharge to cover additional pay for those working during the holidays.

How to get to Da Nang?

Da Nang is fortunate to be home to Da Nang International Airport which is only 15 minutes drive from the city centre.

Da Nang does have international flights from other destinations in Asia such as Thailand, Malaysia or Cambodia but if you’re coming from Europe, the USA or the UK, the best way to get to Da Nang is to fly into Ho Chi Minh City International Airport or Hanoi Ba Noi International Airport and take a domestic flight to Da Nang.

Domestic flights in Vietnam are very affordable, usually around £30-40 plus baggage.

Things to consider for planning a trip to Da Nang

If you are considering visiting Da Nang during the rainy season, this is a cheaper time of year however there is often flooding, particularly in neighbouring Hoi An Ancient Town - which is one of the most at-risk UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world due to being below sea level and flood waters increasing every year.

Also some day trips from Da Nang are not possible during the rainy season due to increased risk of flash flooding and land slides. This particularly affects day trips to Hue, Ba Na Hills and My Son.
